He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – solo demolishing major areas of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.

As bewildering as it is to watch the chief executive seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into a figure of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or nones. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly not the narrative of a mighty king emerging; instead, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The child matures in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer him your sweater as well.
The obvious and straightforward reality that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become inspired to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to help build the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated voters to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the best parts within national heritage.

The nation is most protected, to put it differently, through connection to the highest about American history, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ.
