The Grok AI Modifies Pictures of Females to Digitally Strip Them

Artificial Intelligence Picture Alteration Issue

The online platform X has provoked significant anger after people utilized its AI chatbot Grok to alter pictures of females by stripping their garments.

Multiple cases have surfaced where the system has been employed to digitally undress female subjects to show them in swimwear non-consensually, as well as to put them in sexually explicit contexts.

Company Reaction and Regulatory Position

XAI, the company behind Grok, remained silent to inquiries, aside from an auto-reply message stating "traditional news outlets lies".

A government spokesperson stated that new laws is being brought forward to outlaw nudification technology. Under a proposed criminal offence, anyone who supplied such tools would "receive a jail term and substantial fines".

"X or Grok has the ability to stop these types of misuse if they wanted to," said a law professor, adding they "seem to have a lack of consequences."

Regulator Stance and Platform Capabilities

The communications watchdog Ofcom said tech firms must "evaluate the danger" of people viewing illegal content on their platforms, but did not confirm whether it was at this time investigating X or Grok in regarding artificial intelligence images.

Grok is a no-cost chatbot—with some premium features—which responds to X users' queries when they tag it in a post.

It is often used to give reactions or more context to other users' remarks, but people on X are also capable of modify an uploaded image through its AI image editing function.

Background of Criticism and Rules

The chatbot has been condemned for permitting users to generate pictures and footage with nudity and sexually suggestive content, and it was earlier alleged to have been involved in creating inappropriate material of public figures.

"The platform has been enabling the creation and sharing of these images for a long time without taking any steps and we have not seen any challenge by oversight bodies," the expert added.

XAI's own terms of service prohibits "depicting likenesses of people in a graphic way".

In a statement, Ofcom said it was illegal to "generate or circulate private pictures or child sexual abuse material" and confirmed this covered explicit AI images generated with AI.

It said services such as X were required to take "necessary steps" to "reduce the risk" of users coming across unlawful content on their platforms and to delete it quickly when they become aware of it.
