French authorities to begin stopping small boats in English Channel after UK pressure
France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to official statements.
French police have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a possible method to disable the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which dropped off when the former government official departed from government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats before they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
